If you go down to the beach today….

Local arts trust, ‘Big Things On The Beach’ was set up six years ago by a group of residents in Portobello to explore the potential of the beach in Portobello as a site for public art works. A couple of years ago, ‘Wonder’, which comprised three large pyramids made out of sand bags, appeared on the beach.  With further funding in place, the Trust wants to commission new work.  They’re looking for some big ideas.

Big Things on the Beach are looking to commission a stimulating, temporary artwork for Portobello, Edinburgh, Scotland, of which the duration can be between one day and six months. This is the first of three artworks to be commissioned throughout the coming year, with additional opportunities beyond 2010 to be advertised in due course.

Part of a long-term vision funded by the Scottish Arts Council and the City of Edinburgh Council and led by a community based trust, Big Things on the Beach  ‘Imagine Porty Prom’ will involve the community of Portobello in developing a long term Public Art Plan for the area. This commission is to be based on or around the seafront or promenade area of Portobello, a seaside town in the suburbs of Edinburgh City, and is open to artistic practitioners who work in any media; events and performances will be considered.

A budget of £9,000 is available, although please do apply if you think a proposed idea would require a slightly increased budget.

Commissions should be in progress or partially created during the holiday week of 19 October 2009 and completed entirely by the start of December 2009. Applications including examples of past work and any provisional ideas at this stage are welcome.

Please email Susan Grant at susan@bigthingsonthebeach.org.uk or visit www.bigthingsonthebeach.org.uk for further details.

Deadline for applications: midnight Friday 4 September 2009
