Tapping Turner at the Tramway
The Turner Prize and the City of Glasgow have become almost synonymous with Glasgow School of Art. GSA has produced five past winners and 30% of all nominations since 2006. This year the exhibition itself comes to the Tramway in Glasgow and with an anticipated 50,000 visitors flocking into the area, the local community have plans of their own to capitalise on this (albeit temporary) heightened awareness of design and community place making.
Pollokshields Community Council has created the ‘Pollokshields Playhouse’ on a derelict site opposite the Tramway. This is a hub for the local community which, with the support of a range of creative practitioners, offers the tools and materials to test out ideas about civic amenities and creative participation as a means of exploring place. The site will include an auditorium area and workshops for local groups. It is fully funded for the duration of the Turner Prize show and is expected to be operate for at least twelve months. Pollokshields will also promote alternate modes of transport. The Community Council is holding a Cycling Celebration Day on 24th October in cooperation with the city council following the opening of South-West City Way cycle route, a new piece of infrastructure safely linking Pollokshields to the city centre. This event will stimulate establishment of a new Pollokshields Cycling Forum where local residents can come together to promote cycling with funding from Cycling Scotland’s ‘Cycle Friendly Community Award’.
